Probate, insurance and auction valuations — handled with care
At The Coin Cabinet, we understand that every collection tells a story. In many cases, those stories are deeply personal and connected to family, memory, and legacy. Our Probate Valuation and Valuation services are designed to provide clear, professional guidance with care, discretion and respect at every stage of the process.
Whether you are administering an estate, seeking a valuation for insurance or family purposes, or simply wishing to better understand a collection, our experienced team can assist with sensitivity and professionalism.
A Probate Valuation is a formal valuation prepared following a bereavement for estate administration and legal purposes. These valuations establish the fair market value of items at the date of death and may be required by solicitors, executors, accountants, or HMRC as part of the probate process.
We appreciate that these situations can be difficult for families and executors alike. Our approach is always patient, respectful and compassionate, with the aim of making the process as straightforward and reassuring as possible.
Where desired, we can also discuss options for sale, consignment or auction following completion of probate.
An Insurance Valuation differs from both Probate and Auction Valuation. Its purpose is to provide an assessment of the replacement value of items for insurance cover in the event of loss, theft or damage.
Unlike an Auction Valuation, which reflects an estimated current market or sale price, an Insurance Valuation considers the likely cost of replacing comparable material through the appropriate retail or specialist market. As a result, insurance values are often higher than auction estimates.
Our valuations are prepared with clarity and professionalism, helping clients ensure that collections are appropriately documented and adequately insured. Whether assessing a single Sovereign, a cabinet of ancient coins, or inherited gold jewellery, our specialists provide dependable valuations supported by extensive numismatic and precious metals experience.
We are also happy to advise clients on the differences between insurance, probate and auction values so that collections can be understood and managed with confidence.
Our Auction Valuation service is intended for clients considering the sale of coins, collections, gold coins or bullion through The Coin Cabinet.
Unlike Insurance Valuations, which are based on replacement costs, Auction Valuations reflect our specialists' opinion of the likely current market value and expected auction performance of an item or collection. These valuations are guided by recent market results, rarity, condition, collector demand and wider market trends.
Whether you are looking to sell a single rare coin, an inherited collection, or a substantial cabinet assembled over decades, our specialists provide clear and honest guidance regarding the most suitable route to market. With extensive experience handling British, ancient and world numismatics alongside gold and precious metal items, The Coin Cabinet is well placed to help clients achieve the strongest possible results while ensuring the process remains straightforward, transparent and professional throughout.
These fees are fully refundable should the collection or items later be consigned to auction with The Coin Cabinet, or purchased directly by us following probate or valuation.
Clients are welcome to email photographs and details of their items to our team for an initial review. Where appropriate, we may then recommend a more detailed in-person assessment or home visit.
We recognise that inviting specialists into your home, particularly during periods of bereavement, requires trust and confidence. Our team approaches every appointment with professionalism, understanding and genuine care.
From modest family holdings to significant numismatic collections, The Coin Cabinet is committed to offering thoughtful guidance, expert knowledge and a calm hand throughout the process.
